360 Motherboard Cleaning with Cartridge based Spatula tip /

Postby s4charged » Thu Nov 14, 2013 7:09 pm

Picked up this spatula tip just 24 hours ago. So far I have cleaned 2 boards with it (1 ps3 / 1 xbox). Both times everything went smoothly and rather quickly compared to using a short tip.

I recorded a video of me cleaning a 360 motherboard, pretty decent quality have a look :D

As the iron/wick pass over the pads you can see in real time the pads being cleaned very clearly.

Enjoy.

Got the soldering station appropriate for the spatula tip and the tip itself from Circuit Specialist.

Not bad at all for the price so far. Tip is only $12.

@s4charged, maybe to soon for a real verdict.
But if you would buy a new station now, which would you go for?
Short tips or cartridge based?

Thats easy. Cartridge based. Just to use this spatula tip though. This is my first time using a cartridge based tip as well.

Ok, but that is usually an other point to go for them.
Broad range of tips.
The more choice, the more jobs you can handle.

I'malso pretty sure if you would use same tips as your other one, but cartridge based model of course, you will go for it definitely.

Oh, and btw, if you say your 968 works perfectly, don't forget it is a 968+ which is 70 watt also.
Many still have only the 35 watt version, only half power of yours.

I've only started soldering about a year ago to be honest. I started with short tip and just got the cartridge yesterday. It will probably take some time for me to tell the difference, but honestly no complaints with it yet, nice smooth even heat. I have read they transfer heat better obviously because of the design it would make sense.

I'll give it a whirl with a smaller cartridge tip like i used on my 968+ and see if i tell a difference, that would probably a better comparison.

Yeah i caught that last part on the other thread about 968+ having more wattage, thank goodness i got the newer one. 35 watts seems weak for a 968.. especially for the cost..

good to know decent soldering irons 70 watt can be had for $50 more or less.

Maybe you did indeed not realised your 968+ was 70 watt compared to the others only beeing 35w.

And I do hope you get my point now about people should at least go for the cartridge types?
No matter cheap or high end.
