How to Calibrate hot air on Aoyue 968

The system is not calibrated such that the display would match the actual temperature sensor data as doing so would make the hot air gun unusable. This is because the sensor is located inside the hot air gun. As air is passed thru the heater and the sensor out thru the nozzle there would be temperature variations from the sensor and at the measured site. Normally the system is calibrated to have a display of 480c but an internal sensor temperature of 650-700 degrees. (This is to account for the heat loss due to distance from tip of nozzle to target component and the different thermal mass of various nozzles).

IMPORTANT: Follow all proper electrical safely measures when calibrating the system in live mode with the back panel opened for access to the calibration port. Only qualified personnel are allowed to open the back panel of the system to perform calibration procedures.

Caution: High voltages are present inside the system.

Simple Calibration procedures: (Factory calibration procedures requires an attachment to the internal sensor for precise calibration)

1. Unplug system from mains.

2. Loosen the screw which hold the back plate.

3. Locate the calibration port. Use a small but long philips screw to reach the calibration port, make sure not to touch or allow the screw driver to come in contact with any other components in the system.

4. Attach a 1124 or 1130 nozzle on the hot air gun. This setup would concentrate the hot air stream for better temperature readings.

5. Place a k type thermocouple 2-5 mm from the nozzle directly in the path of the hot air stream.

6. Plug system to power source.

7. Turn on the hot air gun function.

8. Adjust set temperature to 480 degrees, wait for temperature to stabilize.

9. Check the external temperature sensor reading, adjust the calibration port "W1" encircled in red in the attachment (968 hot air calibration.JPG).

10. Adjust calibration port such that the displayed temperature and the external temperature sensor reading is almost equal or within 10 degrees of each other.

Note: This calibration procedure disregards the thermal effects of other type of nozzle. If a larger nozzle is used than the actual temperature coming out of the larger nozzle would be lower than the displayed temperature. Different distances of the target component and different nozzles would affect this calibration. It is greatly recommended that the user not recalibrate the device but simply increase/decrease the set temperature settings to compensate for the different target component distances and nozzle sizes.

Great idea..What do you put the air speed at?

maybe calibrating with the most common Nozzle used , would be better? dunno..

id also calibrate with the most common / average air speed! :D :D
