RSX ohm test points

Postby tahitian954 » Tue May 28, 2013 11:40 pm

This is for those who are interested in ohm testing as a guide if the chip is dead. This is for the RSX chip, but the picture is as if you are looking down through the chip from the top side. Not much to go on with these but here you go!

I've been using this diagram for a while now.

Just to clarify, the same applies as for Xbox 360 GPUs. Just because the reading is 2 ohms + doesn't mean the chip is good. Just means that if the chip is 1.8 ohms or below, it is most likely dead. (I've seen 1.8 ohm 360 chips work and never got back).

Theres always a lot of debate on ohms testing, I only use it to see if a chip is dead, but its up to the repairer how they go about diagnostics. Garageinc, I didnt know this was on here, I've had it on my desktop for ages and just thought it was worth sharing, if nothing else it will let more people know about it.

You can clearly see all its testing for is resistance from VCC to VSS and unless its really low resistance or even shorted which pretty much never happens on these so this will mislead you. There's like 100+ different points you could use and this won't tell you if the chip is good or not unfortunately. Only test that is worth doing is having a socket setup on a board to actually fit the chip and check. Other than that look at it.

The only reason I post about this is because I think people here actually waste good chips which isn't good. Especially expensive chips like ps3 gpu's. These chips take a beating just fine and if they look good they usually are or GLOD. GLOD can't be tested really either.

When I say look at them really look at them though. If there is discoloration or any light green around pads it might not last very long. Just my idea on it and what I do.

Its a pity there is no sure fire way of testing these and other gpu's, imagine the amount of time saved re-attaching if you could know 100 percent whether it is good or not!

to low OR to high readings often points on a dead IC - so just normal that your high reading is from a dead IC
