3 zone profile building

Postby Flashing360 » Fri Sep 21, 2012 11:26 am

ok guys so as more 3 zone machines are selling its time to put up a guide to building a 3 zone profile.

firstly you will have 3 separate controllers, 1 upper, 1 lower HR and 1 lower IR.

This guide will focus on using an upper IR heater.

Whilst the lower HR is a programmable pc410 so we can have steps in the profile ive found this really doesnt work as we cant have steps in the lower IR so i personally use a single step set at the same temp as the lower IR.

so. lower IR: set to 230C

Lower HR:

1.00/230/600 ( THIS SETS A RAMP RATE OR TEMP INCREASE OF 1C/SEC UNTIL THE HEATER IS OUTPUTTING 230C AND WILL HOLD THIS FOR 600 SECS)
end

UPPER IR:

STEP/0/600 (THIS RUNS NO TOPHEAT FOR 600 SECONDS. THEREFORE RUNNING A PREHEAT STEP ON THE PROFILE)
END

What we need to do is run this profile and time how long it takes to reach a consistent topside board temp of 160C. as an example we will say the time taken is 160 seconds. We can now program the second step of the profile:

STEP/0/160 (THIS RUNS A PREHEAT STEP FOR 160 SECONDS)
1.00/190/60 (THIS STEP KICKS THE TOP HEAT IN, IT WILL RISE AT 1C/SEC UNTIL THE TOP HEATER IS OUTPUTTING 190C AND WILL RUN FOR 60 SECONDS)
END

Again we need to watch the upper IR controller, once its outputting 190 and the dwell begins we need to time how long before it reaches an actual topside board temp of 190C, we will say it takes 30 seconds as an example so our profile will now be:

STEP/0/160
1.00/190/30 (THIS RUNS THE TOP HEATER WITH A 1C/SEC INCREASE UNTIL IT REACHES AN OUTPUT OF 190C AND WILL HOLD THIS TEMP FOR 30 SECONDS)
1.00/200/60 ( THIS RUNS THE TOP HEATER WITH A 1C/SEC INCREASE UNTIL OUTPUT IS 200C AND WILL HOLD FOR 60 SECONDS)
END

Again we need to watch the upper IR controller, once its outputting 200 and the dwell begins we need to time how long before it reaches an actual topside board temp of 200C, we will say it takes 20 seconds as an example so our profile will now be:

STEP/0/160
1.00/190/30 (THIS RUNS THE TOP HEATER WITH A 1C/SEC INCREASE UNTIL IT REACHES AN OUTPUT OF 190C AND WILL HOLD THIS TEMP FOR 30 SECONDS)
1.00/200/20 ( THIS RUNS THE TOP HEATER WITH A 1C/SEC INCREASE UNTIL OUTPUT IS 200C AND WILL HOLD FOR 20 SECONDS)
1.00/215/60 ( THIS RUNS THE TOP HEATER WITH A 1C/SEC INCREASE UNTIL OUTPUT IS 215C AND WILL HOLD FOR 60 SECONDS)
END

Again we need to watch the upper IR controller, once its outputting 215 and the dwell begins we need to time how long before it reaches an actual topside board temp of 215C, we will say it takes 25 seconds as an example so our profile will now be:

1.00/215/25 ( THIS RUNS THE TOP HEATER WITH A 1C/SEC INCREASE UNTIL OUTPUT IS 215C AND WILL HOLD FOR 25 SECONDS)
1.00/225/60 ( THIS RUNS THE TOP HEATER WITH A 1C/SEC INCREASE UNTIL OUTPUT IS 225C AND WILL HOLD FOR 60 SECONDS)
END

Again we need to watch the upper IR controller, once its outputting 225 and the dwell begins we need to time how long before it reaches an actual topside board temp of 225C, we will say it takes 15 seconds as an example so our profile will now be:

1.00/215/25 ( THIS RUNS THE TOP HEATER WITH A 1C/SEC INCREASE UNTIL OUTPUT IS 215C AND WILL HOLD FOR 25 SECONDS)
1.00/225/15 (THIS RUNS THE TOP HEATER WITH A 1C/SEC INCREASE UNTIL OUTPUT IS 225 AND WILL HOLD FOR 15 SECONDS)
END (THIS ENDS THE PROFILE)

The reason i feel stepped lower HR profiles is bad is due to the fact that you will have a lower temp being given to the bottom of the bga than the rest of the lower side of the board when the idea is to get a nice even preheat.

Have the lower HR nozzle approx 3-4mm below the bga and the upper ir approx 3cm above the bga.

Hope this helps and any questions feel free to ask away 8-)

Hi Karl,
Been playing around with your 3 Zone profile. I loaded the first top IR line ie. Step/0/600. Placed the TC on the board 2mm from the GPU but the top side temp. via the TC never went over 120 for the 600sec duration. Q. could I have a faulty TC .

anyway I loaded your complete profile and used a RROD board. Ran the profile via your software, put the board back into the playstation and it worked fine. :yeah:
Sunday evening 21:00hrs, am I mad or what

Hi Karl
Do you think that profile would work for the XBox ?. Also see my other post re my Top IR TC not being able to reach temp.
Thanks Tommy

Does it reach temp at the end of the profile?

I've changed the TC and it's working fine now.
However the flexable metal TC arm is gunged up with silicone, They (the manfg's) glued the original TC, now I can't get the new TC lead up through the arm.

They do that to give the coating on the probe some protection from the heat....

Pain in the arse I know but it's gotta be done :(

Thanks Karl,

Also how can I see two profiles on the software chart. At the moment I just see the green (Top IR) temp.

Bloody hell i wouldnt post your address on the forum or you may get stalkers

the software is designed to take the reading from the external tc only when using the ir360 pro.
